13、Some people say that today, reading is not as important as it was. These days we have photographs, films, radio and

television. Why read a description of something when you can look at a photograph? Why read a newspaper when the

latest news is brought to us every hour on radio and TV?

Photography was certainly a wonderful invention. Photographs can give a very clear idea of places and of people that

we have never seen. An encyclopedia (百科全书) , for example, is always better when it has good illustrations. But we

also need words to explain the photographs and drawings. A photograph of an elephant may give us a very good idea of

what an elephant looks like, but it tells us nothing about the different sorts of elephants there are and where they are

found, their exact size and weight, how they can be useful to man and so on.

In the same way, a good film has action, movement, color, and maybe music. These are things we do not find on the

printed page. But reading a novel has certain advantages over watching even an excellent feature film. Reading a novel

requires imagination. Each of us imagines a story differently.

Watching news on television can certainly be exciting. But we need newspapers as well. Some important news stories

happen when there are no cameras around. More importantly, a newspaper does not just report the news. It explains

why something has been happening. It also contains interesting articles on different subjects. Newspapers are an

important part of our lives, if we want to understand what is going on in the places we live as well as in other parts of the world.

Reading is very important for information and pleasure. We need to be good readers to enjoy a full life as human beings.

Reading is a skill and like other skills, it needs practice. The more we read, the better readers we become. And the better

readers we become, the more we enjoy reading! The secret is to get the reading habit. Read at least a little every day.

1.According to Paragraph 2, photographs can give us __________.

A.enough information about people and places

B.no information about things

C.some information about things but not enough

D.the wrong information about things

2.Newspapers contain __________.

A.more information than television

B.less information than television

C.more news from other countries

D.less information about important events than TV

3.What are the advantages of novel over a feature film?

A.There are more interesting subjects in novels.

B.We do not hear any music in a novel.

C.Novels always explain what is happening.

D.Novels make us use our imagination.

4.What does the author think about reading?

A.It is a wonderful invention.

B.It is an important part of our lives.

C.It requires no practices.

D.It is not as important as television.

14、There was once a young man who liked puppets (木偶) so much that he became an apprentice (学徒) to a master

puppet-maker. Sadly, the young man was not so clever, and his teacher and the other apprentices were always telling

him he had no talent for making puppets, and that he would achieve nothing in making puppets.

Even so, he enjoyed it so much that he worked day after day to improve. Despite his efforts, they would always find

something wrong with his puppets, and the poor puppets ended up being thrown out of the workshop.

The young man wasn’t going to give up, so he decided that from then on he would spend all his time making just one kind of puppet. Whenever he found a fault in his puppet he would throw it away and start again. Years passed, and with

each new attempt his puppet became a little bit better. By that time, his puppet was much better than anything that the

other apprentices could make, but he kept making improvements. Living like that, the man wasn’t making any money,

and many people laughed at how poor he was.

By the time he was an old man, his puppet was truly wonderful. Finally, after so many years of work, he finished work

on his puppet, and said, “I can’t find anything wrong with it. This time it is perfect”. And for the first time in all those

years, instead of throwing his puppet away, he put it up on the shelf, feeling truly satisfied and happy.

It is well-known that perfect puppet, Pinocchio, came to life after that, had a thousand adventures, and gave that old

man — whose name was Geppetto — more joy than any other famous puppet-maker had ever got from any of their

creations.

B.Because everyone thought he was talented.

C.Because his teacher told him to do so.

2.What was the ending of the poor puppets made by the young man?

A.They were kept by the young man.

B.They were thrown by the young man.

C.They were shared by others.

D.They were collected by his teacher.

3.What can we learn about Geppetto from the third paragraph?

A.He was laughed at by the others.

B.He could only make one kind of puppet.

C.He had collected all the puppets he made.

D.He made a lot of money by selling puppets.

4.When the puppet, Pinocchio, was made, ________.

① Geppetto was already an old man

② Geppetto was satisfied with it

③ Geppetto was much happier

④ Geppetto planned to throw it away

A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④ 5.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Many hands make light work.

B.No one can do two things at once.

C.A good beginning makes a good ending.

D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

15、During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I

could see the other islands, and I said to myself, "Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to

England one day."

So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was hard work,

but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe (独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How silly I was! Why

didn't I think before I began work? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn't move it! I pulled and pushed and

tried everything, but it didn't move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.

That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I did not try

to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now,

not my prison, and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of

the island. I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.

My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes

for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.

I kept food and tools at both my houses, and also wild goats. There were many goats on the island, and I made fields

with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats' milk to drink every day. I

also worked hard in my corn (玉米) fields. And so many years went by.

1.The purpose of making a canoe on the island was to _____________.

A.escape in it B.get to the other side of the island

C.use it for food D.go around the island

2.To survive, the writer did the following EXCEPT _____________.

A.keeping goats for milk B.making clothes from animal skins

C.working in the cornfields D.going fishing in the sea

3.Why didn't the writer use his first canoe?

A.Because it was too small for a long journey.

B.Because it was too heavy to get down to the sea. C.Because there was something wrong with it.

D.Because the writer was busy building a second house.

4.From the story, we can learn that _____________.

A.the writer tried to make his stay comfortable on the island

B.the writer had nothing to do on the wild island

C.the writer tried to escape in the second canoe, but failed

D.the writer was in prison on the island, losing his freedom

5.What is the best word to describe the writer?

A.excited B.brave C.adventurous D.hard-working

17、I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as Mother sat doing letters.

Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I decided that the act of writing must be the most

wonderful thing in the world.

Years later, during her final illness, Mother kept different things for my sister and brother. "But the desk," she'd said

again, "is for Elizabeth." I never saw her anger, never saw her cry. I knew she loved me; she showed it in action. But as

a young girl, I wanted heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. They never happened. And a gulf opened

between us. I was too "emotional (另动感情的) ". But she lived "on the surface".

As years passed I had my own family, I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to her in careful

words and asked her to let me know in any way she chose that she did forgive (原谅) me. I posted the letter and waited

for her answer. None came. My hope turned to disappointment, then little interest, finally, peace---it seemed that nothing

happened. I couldn't be sure that the letter had even got to mother. I only knew that I had written it, and I could stop

trying to make her into someone she was not.

Now the present of her desk told me, as she'd never been able to, that she was pleased that writing was my chosen work.

I cleaned the desk carefully and found some papers inside-a photo of my father and a one-page letter, folded (折叠) and

refolded many times. Give me the answer, my letter asks, in any way you choose. Mother, you always chose the act that

speaks louder than words.

1.The word “gulf” in the passage means _______.

A.deep understanding between the old and the young.

B.different ideas between the mother and the daughter.

C.free talks between mother and daughter D.part of the sea going far in land

2.What did mother do with her daughter’s letter asking forgiveness?

A.She had never received the letter.

B.For years. She often talked about the letter.

D.She read the letter again and again till she died.

3.What’s the best title of the passage?

A.My letter to Mother

C.My mother’s Desk

B.Mother and Children

D.Talks between Mother and Me

18、With only fish and birds for company, Eric Erden has been rowing across the Pacific Ocean to Australia in his

23-foot-long boat since he left California on July 10, 2009.

But crossing the Pacific is only part of his incredible journey. Eric has decided to go all the way around the world using

only his own energy. He will row, bike, and walk without help from any motors at all. Oh, and his plan includes climbing

the tallest peak on six of the continents along the way, to honour the memory of a fellow climber.

He says he is doing this to show kids that they can achieve any goal, but he hopes to have some great adventures along

the way.

As a solo traveller, Eric has already faced disappointments and challenges. Because he has to row about ten hours a day,

he brought along an MP3 player to listen to music and pass the time. Unfortunately, the nearly daily tropical rain for

several months has forced him to keep his player packed away where it's safe and dry.

Storms and huge wave wind regularly force him in the wrong direction and even threaten to overturn his boat.

“Sometimes I really feel scared,” says a somewhat embarrassed Eric. “But that’s all part of the journey. I knew this

wouldn’t be easy when I started. That's why I gave myself two years to finish.”

Protein bars(蛋白棒) give him energy, and he boils water to heat freeze-dried meals on a one-burner stove. A

solar-powered machine removes salt from ocean water so he can drink it, but only when the sun shines. When that fails

he sometimes tries to collect rainwater in buckets.

He’s not bothered by any of the hardships. Eric sees the world as a laboratory where there is much to learn. And when

his trip around the world takes him across land, he enjoys meeting people - especially children. He has already visited

several schools and shared his story.

1.Why is Eric making this trip?

A.To encourage children to reach for their goal. B.To learn more about the world around us.

C.To have many great adventures in strange lands.

D.To honour the memory of a fellow climber.

2.What does Eric plan to do on each of the six continents he will visit?

A.Visit schools to share his story.

B.Study the culture of the local people.

C.Climb the tallest mountain.

D.Cycle from one end to the other.

3.When does Eric expect to finish his journey?

A.July 2009. B.June 2010.

C.January 2011. D.July 2011.

4.Which of the following words best describes Eric’s character?
